Ujjayi is the victorius breath, with a very distinct sound. Some refer to it as an oceanic sound. The technique involves contracting the glottis, at the back of the throat, to create this sound.
This breathing technique is very activating and has a heating effect, inducing a meditative state of mind. It also calms the nervous system, slows the heart-rate, lowers blood pressure.
The volume and sound does not necessarily have to be very loud. It is not the sound that defines the quality or mastery of the exercise and impact on your system.
There are no contraindications for Ujjayi apart from the advice to not pratice before going to bed.
